Note! this is applicable at least for OEL, RedHat, Fedora, but probably to all recent linux flavors.
I had a strange error today when trying to install an Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 on a brand new VM made with VMware server 1.0.5:
When I tried to create linux partitions inside the VM, I’ve got: “no valid devices were found on which to create new filesystems“… like the kernel didn’t see the VM disks.
After less than a minute of google-ing this, I found that the “Typical” configuration inside the VMware Server is creating a SCSI disk with BusLogic controller which is not supported anymore by the Linux kernel.
To overcome this, you must create either a IDE disk either a SCSI disk with a LsiLogic controller.
Good luck!

1. Introduction
============
First, you need to make sure that you have enough space. As space was never a big concern for Oracle (but performance yes), make sure that you have at least 10 GB free disk space.
Second, make sure that you have the latest Windows SP and loopback adapter installed and configured if you are using DHCP. How? See this.
Download the latest 11g release (11.1.0.6 now) and don’t be scared about the size 🙂
If you have a Metalink account, you can also download the last update (11.1.0.7 now, patchset 6890831) and don’t be scared about the size 🙂

Lots of people landed on my blog by searching for “10g XE disadvantages”, but unfortunately I don’t have such an article. I mean until now 🙂
So what are the disadvantages of using 10g XE database? :
- it’s not supported by Oracle support
- it is working on just one processor core, no matter how many you have
- it will not use more than 1 GB of RAM, no matter how much RAM you have
- you cannot store more than 4 GB of user data, hard-coded limitation
- you’ll not find patches for it
- not yet a 11g version
Of course there are lots of advantages:

I deleted by mistake some unsaved photos from my camera. Even that I never came across with file recovery software, this time I had to.

After a short google search, I found PC Inspector Smart Recovery who did a brilliant job. Not very fast, but speed was not what I was looking for.
It managed to recover ~200 MB in less than 10 minutes, good enough for a FREE application.
Good luck!

I had a very strange situation: 2 machines connected wireless to the same router. One was running like a charm, the other one got an IP from DHCP but no gateway and no networking was available on it.
First I thought it is something hardware. Since I had a dual-boot environment on that machine, I booted in Ubuntu and saw that I had also a gateway there and internet was working seamlessly. So it was all about Windows XP…
After lots of formus read, after reinstalling wireless card driver many times, I finally found a solution here, as
– in Windows XP SP2 some repair options were added through netsh command:
