Just 64bit version for the moment, but I’m sure the 32bit version will follow soon. Considering the fact there is nothing on corporate blogs or on eDelivery, I’m sure they will make it public after both version will be available, most probably after Easter.

Regarding the version itself, I used the beta versions and will definitely recommend it.

In a few words: I’m impressed. It’s a must read for everybody who’s working with Oracle.

For those of you who never used SQL Developer, is a GUI like Toad or PL/SQL Developer. The main difference is that it’s free and made by Oracle. As a former user of PL/SQL Developer I have to say that Oracle SQL Developer reached its maturity, Oracle is investing a lot of efforts in developing this tool and this is why now SQL Developer is the most used tool for Oracle development, which is quite impressive considering it has just 2 or 3 years since it was launched.

I was using SQL Developer since it was on beta, still called Project Raptor, and I witnessed the way it grew day by day. From a very simple GUI the development team added:

• migration capabilities, making Oracle Migration Workbench deprecated
• schema copy, schema compare
• import/export capabilities
• SVN/CVS integration
• Data modelling
• excellent reporting capabilities

Now, coming back to the book: what’s better than having a book describing all the above written by the Product Manager of the tool? Sue did a fantastic job writing the book and now everybody have a reference (with a lot of examples and screenshots) for all the capabilities of SQL Developer.

I have to recon that there were quite a few things in the book that I have no idea they exists. This is mostly due to the fact that the product is on such a heavy development and the releases are launched very frequently.

After reading the book I am seriously thinking of buying the hard-copy of the book. Again, it’s something that everybody that deals with Oracle must have.

So what are the disadvantages of using 10g XE database? :

• it’s not supported by Oracle support
• it is working on just one processor core, no matter how many you have
• it will not use more than 1 GB of RAM, no matter how much RAM you have
• you cannot store more than 4 GB of user data, hard-coded limitation
• you’ll not find patches for it
• not yet a 11g version

Of course there are lots of advantages:

• very lightweight installation kit (~150 MB vs ~1700 GB for 11gR1)
• very easy installation
• not very intrusive, much less memory used compared to 11gR1
• very recommended for the application development process
• very recommended as a MySQL replacement
• same code as paid versions, just with some hard-coded limitations (see above)

As an example, I am using on my laptop both 10g XE and 11gR1 EE.
If I need to do a quick migration or something simple, I am starting 10g XE.
If I need to prove/test/play with some 11gR1 features, I am using 11gR1.

I’ve been asked many times if there is possible to install Oracle Application Express on Express Edition of 10g database, both of them being free products. The answer is YES, and the procedure is quite simple, as very well indicated on Oracle website

The steps would be:

• Download the latest version from APEX website
• Unzip the archive in a convenient location on your hard-disk
• Start a SQL*Plus from that location( C:\apex\> sqlplus / as sysdba )
• Install apex:
  @apexins SYSAUX SYSAUX TEMP /i/
• Change admin password:
  @apxchpwd
• Set images path (APEX_HOME is the folder where you unziped the archive):
  @APEX_HOME/apex/apxldimg.sql APEX_HOME
• Run the following script where “password” is the admin password set 2 steps before:
  @APEX_HOME/apex/apxxepwd.sql password
